JANELLE MONAE feat. BIG BOI "Tight Rope" (new video)

Now this is str8 heat! Janelle Monae is Diddy's new artist and I think he's got another winner with her and this song. It's called "Tight Rope".

Big Boi come in to bless the track with a nice verse but the video had me sold from the beginning. The dancing is sick! It reminds me of some old James Brown moves.

Drake's Album Release Date Is...

This has gotta be one of the most anticipated Hiphop albums in a long time. Drake's release date for "Thank Me Later" has been set for May 25th and I'm sure he's gonna do some pretty big numbers based on his previous success with his blockbuster mixtape and guest appearances.

Honestly, I hope it does well for him because of his mixtape success. I saw a comment on a blog somewhere that said since Drake's family has money then he's not real Hiphop. Huh?????

That's BULLSHIT!!!!

I can smell hatred thousands of miles away and this was a classic example. Drake is 100% Hiphop and how he put out a mixtape and a single blew up off of it is unheard off.

I don't know what that hater's definition of Hiphop is but it sure ain't the same as mine. Mine is taking something that already exists and using it for a totally different purpose than originally intended.

For example, turntables were created to play vinyl records and that was their sole purpose. The pioneers of Hiphop created cutting and scratching from these record players and changed the use of the turntable forever. It became an instrument for making music not just listening to it.

I see Drake's success the same way.

Mr.Collipark Talks About Signing Soulja Boy

Here's some more ATL history in the making. Mr. Collipark (formally known as DJ Smurf) who is responsible for blowing up the Ying Yang Twins talks about how he signed Soulja Boy. I remember when Mr. Collipark was on the J Team (of Edward J fame) making mix tapes...I mean like cassette tapes!!! And he had mad skillz for real.

It's an interesting read and it goes to show you its always best to be prepared when an opportunity presents itself. Soulja Boy was very "lucky".

Here's the formula for luck in case you don't know it:

Opportunity + Preparation = Luck

Jay-Z Speaks On Song Writing Process

I pulled this video of Jay-Z breaking down his songwriting process. Dude says he doesn't write the lyrics down but when you got paper like that, you can afford to spend mega hours in the studio getting it right.

Click on the link below to see the video.

Jay-Z Speaks On Song Writing Process (VIDEO) | Official ImGlobalNow Blog | ImGlobalNow News and Celebrity Blogs | Global Grind

How do you break down your songwriting process? Do you write first or need a beat to write to? I can do it either way and I've actually recorded a verse (just one!) without writing it down. I prefer to have the beat though so I can get a feel for the direction I want to take the song.

The New Music Industry: The Online Revolution

Technology has leveled the music industry playing field. It used to be that artist had to make a demo, submit it to many record labels, and hope and pray they were at least called.

The next best thing to getting a record deal was starting your own label but doing so was expensive & risky. There was no guarantee of success and all the rules still applied for a traditional business: most of them fail within the first 5 years. Let’s not even talk about “Industry Rule #4080” and the shadiness that exist with some of the people in the industry.

There are countless stories of artist who have gotten jerked in the music business. From poor money management to getting robbed of publishing rights, it’s all happened.

In comes the Internet to change the music game forever.

Most music websites in the beginning of the Internet were static webpages. You had sites that allowed you to put up a picture and some words. Then came websites with sound bites and finally the ability to upload songs. Later the ability to upload videos was developed and the game changed.

With services like Paypal, artist could sell songs and beats directly online. With sites like YouTube, artists could post videos of themselves online to widen their fan base. The Internet kept expanding and sites like MySpace were created to help music artists get massive exposure. MySpace and other social networking sites allowed artists to get worldwide exposure and seek out people that would be interested in their music.

It was like putting your marketing on steroids! Regular Average Joe’s started popping up on the Internet and getting major deals because the big labels started coming to the Internet for the next big thing. These artists basically had a built-in fan base and this made them easy to market and promote because essentially they had already done the initial legwork.

Some artists even got smart and decided to diversify and figure out other ways of making money online. In addition to selling songs online, some artists began to sell music information products, sell website advertising space, affiliate marketing, and offer web design services.

Let’s look closely at these other ways of making money off the music industry online.

Selling music information products online include things like ebooks and video courses. There are courses on everything from songwriting to how to market your beats online. Information products are cheap to produce and they can be sold over and over very inexpensively.

Many artists have written about what they have done to be successful in the music business. There is no shortage of people trying to get into the music business and people will gladly pay money to learn how to the get ahead of the game faster.

Another way of making money offline in the music industry is create a website or blog and sell advertising space. If you have a high traffic website you can place ads throughout your website that are targeted to your fans. There are companies that will pay you to bring traffic to their sites by clicking on special links that you have place on your site. The more people you send to their sites, the better for you.

A different and popular way of making money online is affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is when you sell other people’s products and services. You do not create the products or services but you get paid a percentage of every sale that comes from your special affiliate ID. There are plenty of music affiliate programs all over the Internet. Most of them are free to join.

You should do you homework when picking out products to sell. There are different programs and rules for each merchant. Read up on any merchant that you like and find out as much as you can about their company and product.

Last but not least, some artists not only sell music on and offline, they also sell other services like web design. Most businesses online hire web design professionals to carry out the company’s vision for the future. A good freelance web designer can make a living building quality websites.

The online revolution has definitely changed the music industry. An artist who once would not have had a chance to get exposure in the music business can not only get that exposure online. They can also generate money online as well to help them advance their career and allow them to do what they love more easily.

Celebrating the Life of The Notorious B.I.G.

Today marks the 13th anniversary of the death of Christopher Wallace aka The Notorious B.I.G. aka Biggie Smalls. He was gunned down as the result of the senseless East Coast/West Coast Hiphop rivalry.

Although he only was able to bless us with 2 albums (He was killed before the 2nd one was released), they were both classic joints. I listened to alot of his work on AOL Radio earlier today and I knew my blog post was going to be about Biggie.

I only got to see him perform once and that was before his first album Ready To Die dropped. I ran that CD until someone stole it!

Anyway here is one of my favorite joints from Biggie featuring P. Diddy & Mase, "Mo Money, Mo Problems".

Here's another one of my favorites with The Isley Brothers sample from "Between The Sheets" called "Big Poppa". Throw ya hands in the air if you's a true playa!!!

Next is "Juicy". This one really put him on the map.

Last but not least "Hypnotize". This was one of the big budget videos with a fresh speed boat and helicopters. Dope!!!

Rest In Peace B.I.G.!!! You are truly missed Brother!!!

Congratulations Mo'Nique on Your Oscar Award!

Wow! Mo'Nique just won her first Oscar Award for the movie precious. Although this has nothing to do with making beats, I think its dope because she honestly deserved it.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program...

Rick Ross has a new song that's hot. Its called "Mafia Music 2" featuring Chrisette Michelle and it produced by the JUSTICE League. I think its a hot track with that "Magnificient" feel to it. I had to listen to that joint as soon as possible.

Ross still gets mad props for having Special Ed in the video. I had to school one of my co-workers to who Ed was by running a few of his joints on YouTube. Besides, Ross' opening lines in the song are from Ed.

Now that's Hiphop to the fullest: taking something already classic and putting a fresh spin on it.

Listen & learn!

DJ Drama Helps Squash Beef Between Young Jeezy & Gucci Mane

This is real talk here in the ATL. There had been a long standing feud between Young Jeezy and Gucci Mane which started over a song the two worked on called "So Icy". This was back in '04-05' and the song was super hot at the time.

It was Gucci's song and Jeezy was featured as a guest. According to the rumors, Jeezy wanted to include the song on his debut album and Gucci disagreed. Some of Jeezy "people" allegedly came looking for Gucci and he killed one of them in self-defense. They begin dissing each other and this has gone on for 5 years!!!
